The final episodes of Bridgerton Season 4 may bring an emotional turn, according to author Julia Quinn, who has hinted that viewers should prepare for a potentially sombre development when the remaining episodes arrive on Netflix on February 26.
Speaking to US Weekly in an interview published on February 5, Quinn suggested that the conclusion of the season could involve moments of loss. “I can just say, get your tissues ready, because it’s rough,” she said. “When I visited the set, they were filming scenes and I saw a scene that was—at the same time incredibly joyful and just heart-wrenching—so, yeah, you’re gonna need tissues for part 2.”
The speculation has been fuelled by promotional footage, including scenes showing Violet Bridgerton dressed in black rather than her usual pastel colours. While Quinn did not confirm any specific plot details, readers familiar with the novels have pointed to several possible storylines that involve death.
In To Sir Phillip, With Love, the novel centred on Eloise Bridgerton, the story begins with the death of Marina Crane, the wife of Sir Phillip Crane. Her death leads to the correspondence that ultimately brings Eloise and Phillip together.
In When He Was Wicked, Francesca’s novel, her husband John Stirling dies only two years after their marriage. His death is central to the story, shaping Francesca’s journey as she later finds love with John’s cousin, Michael Stirling.
The Netflix adaptation has already introduced this dynamic by gender-swapping the character to Michaela, raising questions about whether John’s fate will remain unchanged on screen.
Fans have also speculated about the possible death of King George, whose declining health has been referenced repeatedly throughout the series and its prequel, Queen Charlotte. A royal death would require members of high society to observe mourning, aligning with the visual cues seen in recent trailers.
While no outcome has been confirmed, Quinn’s comments suggest that season four will close on a more reflective and emotional note than usual for the ton.
