KARACHI:

Veteran actor Mustafa Qureshi has welcomed Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's move to revive the Basant festival in Lahore, but urged the provincial government to extend the celebration across Punjab.

Speaking from Lahore, Qureshi stated that the televised excitement for the city's festivities is making residents of other regions feel sidelined. "They, too, should be given a chance to share in the joy of Basant," Qureshi said, emphasising his appeal for cautious celebration.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has publicly described Basant as a symbol of cultural pride and collective spirit, saying it reflects the beautiful tradition of Punjab and that the enthusiasm around its return is remarkable. She has emphasised promoting the festival safely and positively to present a progressive image of the province.

Qureshi stressed that Lahore's residents must strictly follow government safety protocols to prevent past tragedies. "Even a small lapse could turn happiness into sorrow," he cautioned.

Qureshi's call for a regulated, province-wide revival echoes sentiments from other major celebrities. Singer-actor Ali Zafar has long championed the cause, calling Basant "our culture" and launching the #BringBackBasant campaign for regulated revival.

Cricket legend Wasim Akram has similarly voiced nostalgia for the festival, advocating for its return "with proper measures." Actresses like Meera frequently post nostalgic Basant content online, while host Fahad Mustafa has discussed its cultural and economic benefits on his show.

The Punjab government departments have released a Basant anthem titled 'Phir Aai Basant' performed by singer-com.

Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bukhari urged that Basant should not be politicised and stressed that the cultural celebrations should proceed peacefully and responsibly.
