The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, has left residents of a normally quiet Arizona neighborhood shaken as investigators confirm the case is being treated as a possible abduction.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in Catalina, Arizona, on Saturday. In the days since, law enforcement presence in the area has intensified, with helicopters, drones and forensic teams combing the neighborhood. According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, evidence found inside the home led investigators to conclude that Guthrie did not leave on her own.

“We saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” Nanos said during a press conference. “After processing that crime scene, we believe we do in fact have a crime, and we’re asking the community’s help.”

Neighbors told Newsweek that the situation has created widespread fear and uncertainty. One resident, who asked not to be identified, said the entire community is on edge. “I think everyone is just scared and worried about Nancy and hoping that she’s okay,” the neighbor said.

Another neighbor, Gigi Breeding, described the shock of seeing such heavy police activity in an area known for its calm. “When there were helicopters and drones everywhere, and we didn’t know what was happening, it was really disconcerting,” she said, adding that the neighborhood is usually very quiet and close-knit.

Authorities have emphasized the urgency of the search, noting that Guthrie requires daily medication. Sheriff Nanos said missing even 24 hours of medication could be life-threatening, heightening concern as time passes.

Investigators have completed their initial search of Guthrie’s home and have returned it to the family. DNA samples collected from the scene have been submitted for analysis, though officials say no suspects have been identified so far. The sheriff’s department has also acknowledged reports circulating online about a possible ransom note, stating that all tips and leads are being taken seriously and reviewed in coordination with the FBI.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement is urging anyone with information to come forward. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and 88-CRIME are offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for Guthrie’s disappearance.

For now, neighbors say the uncertainty is the hardest part. “We’ve lived here for over 20 years, just like Nancy,” Breeding said. “It’s terrible. Everyone is hoping she’s found safe.”
