Josh Gad to star in WWII‑era drama 'Gerron’s Last Film' directed by Simon Curtis
Kurt Gerron was a Jewish actor and director who was forced by Nazis to make propaganda films during the Holocaust

Josh Gad is set to lead a powerful new biographical drama titled Gerron’s Last Film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Simon Curtis. The film, rooted in true events from World War II, will explore the life of Kurt Gerron, a Jewish actor and director who was compelled by Nazi authorities to make propaganda films during the Holocaust.
Gad, known for his versatile roles in film and television as well as his voice work in major animated franchises, will portray Gerron, bringing to life a story of artistic brilliance caught in one of history’s darkest chapters. The project reunites Gad with director Simon Curtis, whose credits include acclaimed films such as Woman in Gold and other character-driven historical dramas.
The film marks another ambitious turn in Gad’s career, showcasing his range in dramatic material beyond his previous comedic and voice-acting work. Gerron’s Last Film focuses on Gerron’s unparalleled struggle — as a celebrated performer in Weimar-era Germany who ultimately faced impossible moral and artistic choices under Nazi rule.
Production is expected to begin later this year, with principal photography planned to take place in Europe, including locations in Germany and the Czech Republic. The story’s setting and historical scope signal a visually rich and emotionally impactful film that continues Hollywood’s recent interest in World War II-era narratives.
The project is being produced by Pie Films, with Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman Keren leading the production team through the company’s newly launched UK office. Pie Films is positioning the movie as both a historical testament and a character study of resilience amid persecution.
While a release date has not yet been announced, the film is expected to generate attention on the awards circuit given its subject matter and the high-profile talent attached. Gerron’s Last Film adds to an expanding slate of serious dramatic fare slated for the coming years, blending historical reflection with character-driven storytelling.
