Couple gets 34-year jail term for newborn's murder

Additional District and Sessions Judge Taxila Farhan Mudassir has announced the verdict in the brutal murder case of a newborn baby girl, sentencing the convicted couple to a combined 34 years in prison along with fines totalling Rs80,000.
The convicts, Zulfiqar Mahmood Satti, son of Shafiq Satti and Areeba Imran, daughter of Imran Ahmed Shams, were sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment each for murder of the newborn.
They were also sentenced to five years' imprisonment and fined Rs10,000 each for the offence of adultery, and two years' imprisonment with a fine of Rs30,000 for criminal conspiracy.
The baby girl was born as a result of the illicit relationship between the convicts.
They inflicted severe blows to the baby's head and back and dumped her in a deserted plot near Gali Sat Darbar Karimi, Sadar Wah Cantt. Locals, alerted by the baby's cries, shifted her to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. After their arrest, the convicts confessed to adultery, the birth of the baby, and subjecting her to violence. The case was registered at Sadar Wah Police Station on December 2, 2023. Following sentencing, the convicts were shifted to Adiala Jail.
Meanwhile, an Additional Sessions Judge Rawalpindi announced a verdict in a separate murder and attempted murder case registered at Kallar Syedan Police Station, sentencing three convicts to a combined 40 years' imprisonment along with Rs3.276 million in diyat, Rs0.5 million in compensation, Rs0.4 million in fines, and Rs3 million in surety penalties.
Convict Kaleem Iqbal was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment and Rs0.5 compensation for murder. Mudassir was sentenced to five years' imprisonment and Rs0.2 million fine for attempted murder, along with Rs0.3 million compensation for causing injury. Farrukh was sentenced to five years' imprisonment and Rs0.2m fine for attempted murder, five years' imprisonment for causing injury, and ordered to pay Rs3.276m in diyat.
The convicts had opened fire following a minor dispute in June 2019, killing one citizen and injuring two others in the limits of Kallar Syedan police.
