Normalcy returns to Shangla after blizzard

After days of intense snowstorms in Shangla, relief and recovery efforts are now underway, bringing partial normalcy to the district.

Following the cessation of heavy snowfall, the main highways connecting Bisham, Puran, Alpuri, Khwazakhela, and Alpuri have been fully reopened, providing much-needed mobility and easing transportation for local residents.

However, electricity restoration in the district's upper and remote areas remains incomplete even after a week, causing persistent difficulties for the public. On the night between Wednesday and Thursday, the Puran and Alpuri feeders were reactivated, but the main line from Alpuri to Karoora could not be fully restored due to fallen poles and broken wires at multiple locations.

In addition, over 47 link roads connecting various upper and lower areas of Shangla remain snowbound, making travel impossible in these regions. Communication systems have also suffered significantly, with PTCL DSL services, mobile networks, and 4G connections experiencing intermittent outages, further hampering public connectivity.

With the clearing of skies on Thursday, markets, commercial centers, and shops in Alpuri and other parts of the district reopened, drawing large crowds eager to resume shopping after a week-long disruption. Residents also began returning to their daily routines while enjoying the rare sunshine.

Tourist spots such as Shangla Top and Yakhtangi Top witnessed the arrival of visitors, as authorities ensured strict adherence to safety measures and banned snow-chain-free vehicles. Tourists relished the scenic beauty of snow-covered landscapes.

While life is slowly returning to normal, the storm caused significant damage to orchards, protective walls, infrastructure, and other essential facilities across several villages. Assessments of the destruction are now being initiated.

Post-snowfall, local springs, streams, waterfalls, and rivers have seen increased water flow. Despite clear skies on Thursday, cold winds continued to sweep through the valley, keeping temperatures unusually low, especially during nighttime.

The Meteorological Department has forecast another spell of snow and rain from Friday through February 2, signaling potential further challenges for the district.
