Terraria update 1.4.5 set for release nearly 15 years after the game’s launch

Terraria update 1.4.5 to be released on January 27, adding new content after more than three years of development

Terraria is set to receive a major new update almost 15 years after its original release, with developer Re-Logic confirming that version 1.4.5 will launch on January 27. The update follows more than three years of development and marks the first significant content addition since the Labor of Love update in September 2022.

Re-Logic has described update 1.4.5 as the Bigger & Boulder update, reflecting the scope of its additions. Although it has been presented as a potential final major update, the studio has previously continued development beyond similar statements. Crossplay functionality is planned but will be introduced at a later stage rather than at launch.

The update introduces a wide range of new features, including additional weapons, enemies and boss music. Players will also see new non-player character portraits and gain the ability to transform into various animals.

A notable quality-of-life change allows players to craft items using materials stored in nearby chests, removing the need to manually transfer resources into their inventory.

According to Re-Logic, a full changelog will be published when the update goes live. An overview of the announced changes is already available via the official Terraria wiki, though the developer has suggested that some undisclosed elements may also be included.

Terraria is a 2D sandbox game focused on exploration, resource gathering and combat. Since launching on Steam in May 2011, it has often been compared to Minecraft, though it places a stronger emphasis on combat and boss encounters.

Over the past decade and a half, Terraria has become one of the most successful indie games ever released. The game has sold more than 60 million copies worldwide and has accumulated over one million user reviews on Steam, with 97 per cent marked as positive.
