Oscar-winning filmmaker Bobby Moresco, known for Crash, is set to direct a new biopic on fashion legend Giorgio Armani. The film, titled Armani – The King of Fashion, is being produced by Italian producer Andrea Iervolino, who has previously collaborated with Moresco on the racing biopics Lamborghini and Maserati. The script will be co-written by Moresco and his daughter Amanda, charting the personal and professional journey of Armani, who passed away in September at age 91.
The film aims to capture the life of Armani, one of the most influential designers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Armani’s impact stretched from the runway to Hollywood, where he designed costumes for Richard Gere in American Gigolo and contributed to over 30 films. Icons such as Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Sophia Loren were frequent clients, cementing his global fashion influence.
Despite the Italian roots of the project, Iervolino has revealed that filming is likely to take place in Hungary rather than Italy. He cites structural and administrative uncertainties in the Italian production environment, including recent tax credit changes and investor concerns, as key reasons for the move. He stressed that the decision is not reflective of Italian talent or artistic considerations but stems from the practical need to secure international financing.
Iervolino, who has worked on projects such as To The Bone and Waiting For The Barbarians, expressed his continued dedication to Italian storytelling. He explained that although the films will be shot abroad, they remain a tribute to Italian icons and culture, and he hopes to continue developing similar projects that celebrate Italy to global audiences.
It remains unclear whether the biopic will explore Armani’s private life, including his relationship with business partner Sergio Galeotti, or focus exclusively on his professional achievements. There has been no confirmation yet on whether the Armani family is collaborating on the project.
