Head Marala welcomes first smew duck
.

A sighting of the smew duck has been confirmed for the first time at Head Marala in Sialkot district, marking a significant development for wetland conservation and habitat improvement in the area.
According to Punjab Wildlife Rangers, the rare waterfowl was spotted swimming in Head Marala Lake by a wildlife photographer, who documented the sighting through photographs.
The images were later reviewed and verified by experts, who confirmed the bird's identification as a smew duck.
Wildlife officials said the smew is typically found in the colder regions of Europe and northern Asia and migrates south in limited numbers during winter. Its presence in Pakistan has been recorded only on rare occasions.
Officials noted that the sighting at Head Marala indicates improving aquatic conditions and a healthier natural habitat suitable for migratory birds.
The Wildlife rangers stated that monitoring of bird population, protection of natural habitats and action against illegal hunting in the area would be strengthened to ensure a safe environment for rare and migratory bird species.
