Alexander Skarsgård offered a mix of praise and self-deprecating humor while celebrating his father Stellan Skarsgård’s recent Oscar nomination during Variety’s Sundance Cover Party, according to Variety.
Speaking at the event on Jan. 24 during the 2026 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Alexander reflected on what he described as an emotional awards season. He joked that his own confidence took a hit after failing to secure wins or additional nominations, while his father earned an Academy Award nomination for Sentimental Value. In a lighthearted moment on stage, Alexander quipped that his self-esteem had “hit rock bottom,” drawing laughter from the crowd as he contrasted his situation with his father’s success.
Earlier in the season, Alexander had received recognition from the British Independent Film Awards and Gotham Awards for his performance in the drama Pillion. However, he told attendees that the momentum stalled, while Stellan’s Oscar nod ultimately stole the spotlight within the family.
Despite the jokes, Alexander made it clear that the moment was meant to celebrate his father’s achievement. He also noted that being featured on the cover of Variety helped restore his morale, humorously crediting the magazine for reviving his ego.
Skarsgård attended Sundance this year with two projects: A24’s music mockumentary The Moment, starring Charli XCX as a fictionalized version of herself, and the romantic drama Wicker, co-starring Olivia Colman and Peter Dinklage.
The event also marked a symbolic farewell to Park City as Sundance’s longtime home. As noted by Variety, the festival is set to relocate to Boulder, Colorado, beginning in 2027, closing a decades-long chapter in Utah.
