Natalie Portman has spoken out forcefully against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement following a fatal shooting during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis, calling the incident part of a broader crisis in the country. The Oscar-winning actor made the remarks while attending the Sundance Film Festival, where news of the shooting overshadowed celebrations around the film event.
Reacting to the incident, Portman said, “What is happening in our country is just obscene,” expressing outrage over the loss of life and the actions of federal authorities. Her comments came as protests and public anger grew in response to the shooting, which has intensified scrutiny of ICE operations nationwide.
Portman directly criticized political leadership and immigration enforcement agencies, adding, “What President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and ICE are doing to our citizens and to undocumented people is outrageous and needs to end.” She emphasized that the issue extends beyond immigration policy and into questions of humanity, accountability and government responsibility.
Portman, while talking to Deadline, added that she couldn't be more proud of the American people for the way they are protesting and protecting each other from ICE.
