Paul Giamatti has opened up about landing a role in the Star Trek universe, admitting he never truly believed the opportunity would arrive. The acclaimed actor now appears in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+, playing Nus Braka, a pirate with half Klingon and half Tellarite heritage who becomes a recurring threat to the young cadets led by Holly Hunter’s Chancellor Nahla Ake.

Speaking about the casting, Giamatti said he was stunned when the call finally came. “I didn't actually think I'd ever actually get a call. I made no secret about the fact that I loved the show, but I never thought it would actually be something that would happen. It's a top experience for me. I still kind of can't believe that I got to do it.” His excitement reflects a lifelong connection to the franchise that began in childhood.

Giamatti explained that his love for Star Trek started when he was around seven years old, watching reruns of the original series with his father. Those early viewing sessions left a lasting impression, particularly through Leonard Nimoy’s Spock. Over time, however, his interest shifted towards the fiercer Klingon characters, whose emotional intensity felt closer to his own acting instincts. He joked that even as a child he suspected he was better suited to portraying Klingons rather than the calm and logical Vulcans.

The role of Nus Braka also gave Giamatti the chance to explore a more openly antagonistic character. He shared that he enjoys playing complex and abrasive figures, but stepping into the role of a clear villain brought a new sense of creative freedom. According to the actor, the exaggerated and theatrical nature of such characters allows performers to lean into bolder choices on screen.

Fans quickly reacted to the news of his casting after images and clips from the series began circulating online. Many praised his transformation and makeup, with viewers commenting on how well his expressive style fits the dramatic tone of the character. Supporters also highlighted his long history of publicly praising the franchise, describing the casting as a satisfying full circle moment.

Giamatti also revealed that while he tried to pass his Star Trek enthusiasm on to his own son, the younger generation gravitated more towards Star Wars. Despite that, he remains proud to finally be part of a universe he admired for decades. New episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy continue to stream weekly on Paramount+.
