“This is a summer of love”: Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi on the intensity behind Wuthering Heights

Margot Robbie says filming Wuthering Heights became an unexpectedly intimate and emotionally charged experience, one that included a memorable Valentine’s Day gesture from co-star Jacob Elordi that perfectly captured the spirit of the story.

While working on the gothic adaptation, Robbie revealed that Elordi marked Valentine’s Day by transforming her room with roses, fully committing to his role as Heathcliff. The gesture went far beyond flowers, blending drama, symbolism, and character-driven intention.

“You made my day and, as Heathcliff, filled my room with roses and it was so cute,” Robbie recalled. “I remember thinking on Valentine’s Day, oh he’s probably a very good boyfriend, ’cause there’s a lot of thoughtfulness in this.”

Robbie noted that what stood out wasn’t just the scale of the gesture, but the care behind it. Elordi reportedly included a handwritten note written from Heathcliff’s perspective, along with a small crafted tombstone, a nod to the dark romanticism that defines Wuthering Heights.

“It wasn’t just the gesture of the roses,” she added. “It was the thing written from Heathcliff, and that little tombstone thing. I was like, ah, crafts! Love that. It was crafty, it was meaningful, it was dramatic.”

The Valentine’s Day moment became emblematic of the production’s approach: fully immersive, emotionally fearless, and unapologetically theatrical. Rather than treating the novel as a traditional romance, the cast and filmmakers leaned into its obsession, intensity, and emotional excess.

Robbie, who stars as Catherine Earnshaw and also produces the film, has described the shoot as “a summer of love”, not in a lighthearted sense, but as a period of deep creative trust. Elordi, taking on the demanding role of Heathcliff, has said the character required emotional vulnerability and total commitment, something the set actively encouraged.

Directed by Emerald Fennell, the adaptation aims to reframe Wuthering Heights for modern audiences without softening its darker edges. The chemistry between Robbie and Elordi, shaped by moments like the Valentine’s Day exchange, is expected to play a central role in bringing the story’s volatile relationship to life.
