The singer has poured his grief into a track titled “Dark to Light”, featured on his latest album "How Did I Get Here?". The song reflects on loss, regret and the pain of saying goodbye, with lyrics that suggest Tomlinson wished he could have done more for Payne during his struggles.
“Dark to Light” is believed to reference a tattoo Payne had that read “here dark meets light,” adding a deeply personal meaning to the tribute. The emotional ballad stands out as one of the most vulnerable moments on the album, capturing Tomlinson’s raw emotions as he processes the death of his friend.
"I wish you could see how you look in my eyes. One more time. Would it make a difference? Would it make you smile? Could it bring you from dark to light?" Tomlinson sings in the song.
"Don't go anywhere I can't follow. Don't go anywhere I can't follow. Don't go anywhere I can't follow. You know I'll be by your side," he adds in the bridge.
Payne tragically died in October 2024 at the age of 31, sending shockwaves through the music industry and One Direction’s global fanbase.
Tomlinson and Payne both recalled stories of early tension between them during the formation of the band but they both soon became good friends and got closer after One Direction went into hiatus.
In his heartfelt note after Payne passed away in 2024, Tomlinson called him a brother saying, "I am beyond devastated to be writing this but yesterday I lost a brother. Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul".
"I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was," he promised Payne and closed the note with: "Payno, my boy, one of my best friends, my brother, I love you mate. Sleep well X".
The tribute has been widely shared online, with listeners saying it highlights the lasting bond between the bandmates and serves as a poignant reminder of Payne’s impact on Tomlinson’s life.
