City traffic cops get new uniform

The Punjab government has approved changes in the uniform of the Lahore traffic police.
The new design will be introduced in the provincial capital, while traffic wardens in other districts will continue to wear the existing uniform, sources said.
They said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had endorsed the proposal to replace the light blue uniform worn by Lahore traffic wardens with a navy blue colour scheme. The decision was taken on Tuesday during a meeting with senior officers.
The wardens deployed on the city roads will wear navy blue trousers with white shirt and belt.
The uniform will also include a blue tie and jersey, navy blue coat and cap.
In addition, the officials said, a more formal dress code has been approved for traffic police office staff in the provincial capital.. Officials performing administrative and supervisory duties will be required to wear formal uniform, including a coat or blazer.
They said the decision had been taken after consultations in the traffic department for introducing a distinct, formal and professional identity for the personnel serving in the metropolis. The new uniform is expected to be introduced in phases.following completion of the procurement and distribution arrangements.
Three design samples of the approved uniforms for office, women and field staff were presented before the CM.
In October last year, the chief minister had called off a proposal to introduce a fawn-coloured uniform due to its high cost, reportedly saving the exchequer nearly Rs60 million.
A senior officer told The Express Tribune, "Lahore has unique traffic challenges and enforcement environment. The revised uniform is meant to enhance visibility, authority and professionalism, particularly in the high-pressure urban setting."
