Madelyn Cline is in talks to join Glen Powell in an untitled original comedy being developed at Universal Pictures, with Judd Apatow attached to direct.

The project, co-written by Apatow and Powell, is currently scheduled for theatrical release on February 5, 2027. Cristin Milioti has also joined the cast, further expanding the ensemble.

The film centers on a country-western music star, played by Powell, whose career enters a downward spiral. According to sources, Cline is set to portray a pop star in the story. Studio executives had initially considered casting a real-life pop musician for the role before opening the search to actors. Following recent meetings, Cline reportedly impressed filmmakers and studio leadership, leading to an offer.

Apatow will produce the film through Apatow Productions as part of his longstanding overall deal with Universal. Powell and Dan Cohen will produce under Barnstorm’s first-look agreement, with Kevin Misher producing via Misher Films. The project will be overseen by Universal executives Erik Baiers and Jacqueline Garell.

Cline’s casting follows a string of high-profile projects that have elevated her profile in both television and film. She rose to prominence through Netflix’s Outer Banks, which returned for its fourth season in 2025 and remained in the platform’s Top 10 for more than seven weeks. She is expected to return for the fifth and final season in 2026.

In recent years, Cline has starred in Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel and Amazon’s romantic drama The Map That Leads to You, which debuted at No. 1 on Prime Video. She will next appear alongside Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz in Lionsgate’s Day Drinker, directed by Marc Webb.
