MIANWALI:

A total of 100 people were murdered in Mianwali district during 2025, a decline compared to 120 killings reported in 2024, while the figure in earlier years had reached as high as 149.

The murders included incidents stemming from personal enmity, minor disputes, and so-called honour killings. Officials said the decrease indicated an improvement in the law and order situation in the district.

Police officials said families of the victims find some measure of relief when suspects are arrested, but those cases where accused persons flee within the country or abroad continue to cause insecurity and prolonged distress for the affected families.

In this backdrop, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sargodha Region, Dr Muhammad Shehzad Asif Khan, along with DPO Mianwali Captain (retd) Rai Muhammad Ajmal and SP Investigation Badr Munir, held an open court (khuli katcheri) at Mochh police station. During the session, most complaints raised by citizens related to the non-arrest of murder suspects who had absconded after committing crimes.

Addressing the gathering, the RPO declared the current year as the "year of arrests of absconders," assuring that all available resources would be utilised to bring fugitives, whether inside or outside the country, to justice.

Later, a high-level meeting was held at the RPO office to review the performance of the Special Operations Cell.

The meeting, attended by DSP Legal officers and other concerned officials, focused on accelerating action against dangerous proclaimed offenders residing abroad.Officials disclosed that last year 136 high-risk absconders involved in heinous crimes were identified.

With Interpol's cooperation, red notices have been issued for 102 of them, while legal proceedings against the remaining 34 are underway.

As a result of coordinated efforts, 20 most-wanted offenders have been arrested abroad and repatriated to Pakistan.
