Nintendo’s beloved video game mascot Mario has a new voice in the gaming world, and the actor behind it, Kevin Afghani, is openly talking about what it means to take on such an iconic role.
Afghani, who has voiced Mario, Luigi and other characters in recent titles like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario Kart World and Super Mario Party Jamboree, spoke with USA Today about stepping into the shoes of his predecessor and what the job means to him.
Afghani said he feels a profound respect for the legacy that came before him, especially the work of longtime Mario voice actor Charles Martinet, who defined the character’s voice for decades before transitioning to a new role as Nintendo’s official “Mario Ambassador.”
Reflecting on the pressure and excitement of following Martinet, Afghani told USA Today: “Look, Charles, as far as I’m concerned, IS Mario. He created something that is so unbelievably iconic. And he did it so masterfully. If I wasn’t nervous, then I’m the wrong guy. I’m the second guy who’s doing Mario. Charles is THE guy. There is such an unbelievable respect for Charles. He is amazing.”
Afghani, who grew up playing Nintendo games, described how surreal it feels to now be the voice behind characters that were such an important part of his own childhood. He acknowledged the weight of the role but also the joy that comes with being part of a franchise that has meant so much to players around the world.
Although Martinet stepped back from voicing Mario in Nintendo’s games, with Afghani taking over the roles in 2023 and beyond, Martinet still connects with fans as the series’ ambassador. Afghani also clarified that he hadn’t previously worked for Nintendo before becoming the voice of Mario, despite some rumors to the contrary.
Afghani’s first in‑person fan appearances, including at events like Charlie’s ComicCon in Estero, Florida, are giving longtime followers a chance to meet the new voice of Mario and hear directly from him about his passion for the characters and games.
His candid reflections highlight both the responsibility and thrill of taking over one of the most recognizable roles in gaming history.
As Nintendo continues to release new games and content featuring Afghani’s voice work, fans are getting more familiar with his take on Mario and the wider Mushroom Kingdom cast, bridging the past legacy with its future.
