Timothee Chalamet underwent a dramatic physical transformation for his role in Marty Supreme, relying on extensive prosthetic makeup to fully inhabit the character.
According to details from the film’s creative team, the two-time Oscar nominee wore multiple prosthetic pieces each day to alter his facial structure and texture, giving him a rougher, more weathered appearance that was essential to the role.
The transformation involved five separate prosthetic appliances applied daily, a process that took roughly an hour before filming could begin. The makeup was designed to create acne scarring and uneven skin, helping Chalamet convincingly step into the world of the film, which is set in the mid-20th century and centers on a gritty, grounded character far removed from his real-life persona.
In addition to facial prosthetics, Chalamet also wore contact lenses and glasses to subtly change the shape and intensity of his eyes. These small but deliberate choices were intended to further distance the actor from his familiar image and support the authenticity of the character’s look.
The prosthetics work was overseen by makeup designer Mike Fontaine, who collaborated closely with director Josh Safdie and Chalamet throughout the process. The goal, according to the team, was to enhance the performance without distracting from it, ensuring that the makeup felt natural and emotionally believable on screen.
Marty Supreme highlights Chalamet’s willingness to fully commit to demanding roles, both physically and emotionally. The meticulous prosthetic transformation underscores the film’s emphasis on craftsmanship and realism, reinforcing its reputation as a performance-driven project rooted in detailed character work.
