JUI-F leader succumbs to injuries after IED attack in South Waziristan

A senior Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader, Maulana Sultan Muhammad Wazir, was martyred after sustaining critical injuries in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in South Waziristan on Saturday, police said.
The attack took place in the Wana bazaar area, where suspected militants targeted Maulana Sultan Muhammad Wazir and his young daughter. Police said a remote-controlled locally made IED had been planted near a religious seminary to target Wazir, who also served as the district president of Wafaqul Madaris al Arabia.
Maulana Wazir was injured in the blast and was rushed to Dera Ismail Khan for medical treatment but succumbed to his wounds while being transported.
Lower South Waziristan District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Tahir Shah Wazir confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway. He said law enforcement agencies were examining all aspects of the attack and analysing evidence collected from the site to trace those responsible.
JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed deep grief over the killing, describing him as a sincere and courageous party leader.

In a statement issued on X, he said the attack was not just aimed at an individual but was an assault on moderate, peaceful and democratic thinking, which JUI-F has represented through decades of struggle.
