Robbie GK, who plays smoothie‑maker Kip Grady in the hit TV series Heated Rivalry, admitted he was anxious about how fans would respond to his character’s romantic storyline after the show’s early episodes debuted.

The romantic sports drama, based on Rachel Reid’s Game Changers novels, has quickly become an online sensation since its late‑November premiere.

Heated Rivalry primarily focuses on the intense, years‑long relationship between rival ice hockey players Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander, but the third episode, titled “Hunter,” introduces Kip Grady and fellow player Scott Hunter in a rom‑com‑styled subplot that has divided audiences online.

Robbie said, “After seeing the reactions to the first two episodes, Francois and I were a little anxious about how episode three might be received. It’s such a different tone, and we weren’t sure if fans would embrace it.”

Robbie described the shift as a “full 180,” contrasting Scott and Kip’s softer love story with the steamy central arc of Ilya and Shane, and acknowledged that some fans felt the subplot detracted from the main narrative. He added, “I completely understand why some viewers might feel that way, but we really wanted to show that love and connection can exist in so many different forms. Hopefully, the payoff in later episodes will help change minds.”

The episode ends with Scott and Kip parting ways, diverging from the book’s original plot, but this narrative choice also propels key developments for the show’s central duo. Robbie noted, “That public kiss on the ice between Scott and Kip? It wasn’t just for show — it actually pushes Ilya and Shane’s story forward and ties into the bigger arc of the season. Every moment was meant to build the world, even if it looks different from the books.”

The success of Heated Rivalry has sparked significant fan engagement online, with viewers praising emotional depth and representation while debating story direction. Robbie said, “I’ve been blown away by the support and the passion of the fans. Even when reactions are mixed, it’s incredible to see people caring so much about these characters.” The series has already been renewed for a second season, promising more drama, romance and heightened stakes as the narrative continues to evolve.
