Hilary Duff’s husband Matthew Koma has spoken out following online speculation that his wife was part of a “toxic mum group” described by Ashley Tisdale in a recent essay.
The controversy began after Tisdale published an article in The Cut titled “Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group,” in which she reflected on her experience joining and later leaving a Los Angeles-based circle of mothers after welcoming her first child in 2021.
In the essay, Tisdale described feeling excluded and compared the dynamic to the “echoes of high school,” recalling moments when plans were made without her, including a gathering scheduled on the same day as her daughter’s birthday.
Although Tisdale did not name anyone involved, social media users speculated that the group included Duff, along with other well-known mothers such as Mandy Moore and Meghan Trainor. Tisdale wrote, “To be clear, I have never considered the moms to be bad people. (Maybe one),” before explaining that she ultimately chose to leave the group after addressing the issue directly.
Koma appeared to respond to the speculation on Instagram, where he shared a satirical recreation of Tisdale’s magazine cover. The mock headline read, “When You’re The Most Self Obsessed Tone Deaf Person on Earth, Other Moms Tend to Shift Focus to Their Actual Toddlers,” accompanied by the caption, “Read my new interview with @thecut.”

On the same day, a representative for Tisdale denied that the essay was about Duff or the other celebrities named online. The spokesperson also dismissed rumours that the falling out was politically motivated, noting that Tisdale and the women mentioned are all registered Democrats.
Duff and the other mothers linked to the speculation have not publicly commented on the matter.
