Emma Stone confirms she will not play Miss Piggy in upcoming film
Emma Stone has confirmed that she will not star as Miss Piggy in the upcoming film centered on the iconic Muppet character, despite serving as an executive producer on the project.
As previously reported, Stone is producing the film alongside Jennifer Lawrence, with Tony Award winner Cole Escola attached as the screenwriter. However, in a recent interview with W Magazine, Stone firmly dismissed speculation that she would portray Miss Piggy herself.
“Why would I play a literal star?” Stone said, calling the idea “the biggest insult to Miss Piggy.” She added that neither she nor Lawrence would take on the role, emphasizing that “Miss Piggy is playing Miss Piggy.”
The project was first revealed by Lawrence in November during an appearance on the podcast Las Culturistas with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. At the time, Lawrence announced that she and Stone were producing a Miss Piggy film written by Escola but shared few details about its storyline or release plans.
Days later, Lawrence expanded on the film’s origins during an appearance on The Tonight Show. She explained that early conversations about the project began during the pandemic, when discussions around cancel culture sparked creative ideas. According to Lawrence, a friend jokingly described Miss Piggy as a feminist icon, which helped inspire the concept, though she clarified that this is not necessarily the film’s plot.
Lawrence has also expressed interest in appearing in the film in some capacity, though not as Miss Piggy.
Stone, a two-time Academy Award winner, most recently appeared in Bugonia, Eddington, and Kinds of Kindness. She won her second Oscar for Poor Things in 2023, following her first win for La La Land in 2016. Her only Broadway credit to date was her 2014 performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret.
