Biryani still rules capital's food scene

From roadside stalls to fine dining, Islamabad's favourite dish remains unbeatable

ISLAMABAD:

As the capital's culinary landscape continues to flourish, one thing remains certain — Islamabad's love affair with biryani is here to stay. The fragrant rice dish continues to occupy a cherished place in the hearts — and on the tables - of the city's residents.

Despite the growing popularity of fast food and international cuisines, traditional biryani remains among the capital's most beloved meals. From humble roadside stalls to high-end restaurants, the enticing aroma of steaming biryani permeates markets and food streets alike.

Among the city's most popular spots for biryani enthusiasts are Al-Naz Biryani in Sector G-6 Aabpara, Chaman Biryani in Blue Area, Biryani Hut in Jinnah Super, Karachi Biryani House in Bani Gala, and Hot n Chilli Chilman Biryani in Sector F-10. Temporary stalls have also sprung up across the city, offering authentic flavours that draw customers from all walks of life.

Aqeel - who has been running a biryani stall in Sector G-6 for over a decade — described the dish as both traditional and universally adored.

"The demand for biryani never wanes — it remains steady throughout the year, regardless of the weather," he said, adding that it was a consistently profitable venture.

"I would wholeheartedly recommend this business to anyone considering it," he remarked.

Maryam, a regular customer, said that she frequently orders biryani, calling it one of her all-time favourites. "I could eat biryani every single day if I had the chance — and I'd never tire of it," she said with a smile.

Residents of all ages agree that biryani embodies comfort, flavour, and togetherness. University student Zarmina shared that whether it's a family dinner or an office lunch, biryani is always part of the menu.

"It's one of those dishes that brings everyone together — the aroma, the spices, the anticipation as the lid is lifted — it all makes every gathering special. You can never go wrong with biryani!" she enthused.

Food experts believe the dish's lasting appeal lies in its perfect harmony of spice, fragrance, and tradition. Culinary writer Amna observed that biryani connects people to their roots.

"It's not merely food — it's a story of heritage and flavour passed down through generations," she said.

According to local delivery services, biryani remains the most frequently ordered dish in the capital, particularly during weekends and festive occasions. With newer variations such as chicken, beef, mutton, and even vegetable biryani gaining popularity, the dish continues to evolve while preserving its timeless charm.
