Twin cities welcome 2026 under thick clouds, heavy rain
The twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad witnessed a pleasing and splendid beginning of the New Year as the first day of 2026 dawned with new hopes.
However, due to thick clouds and heavy rainfall, residents of the twin cities were unable to witness the sunrise and its rays on the first morning of the new year.
The sun of the New Year rose with two major pieces of good news. A record reduction of up to Rs10 in petrol and diesel prices was announced as a major New Year gift, while rainfall after four months of dry spell became the second major positive development.
Despite the rain, there was a large turnout for congregational Fajr prayers, during which special prayers were offered for Pakistan’s development, prosperity, security and stability.
Torrential rain soaked the cities as heavy downpours continued from early morning with thunder and lightning. Showers washed dust and dry leaves and trees, leaving greenery refreshed. In Murree, the Queen of the Hills, the first light snowfall of the winter created a picturesque scene for tourists.
