Expert warns of surge in super flu

ISLAMABAD:

A medical expert has stressed the need for greater public awareness in response to a surge in cases of so-called "super flu", a particular strain of influenza affecting both incoming travellers and local residents, while urging timely precautions and vaccination ahead of the winter season.

Speaking to a local media channel, Professor Dr Faisal Mahmood, Section Head of Infectious Diseases at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, outlined the symptoms of the illness.

He explained that the virus presents symptoms similar to those of seasonal influenza, including fever, cough, body aches, muscle pain and fatigue, but emphasised that early diagnosis and appropriate care are essential.

Dr Mahmood cautioned that if the infection progresses to pneumonia, patient — particularly children, the elderly and individuals with underlying health conditions—face a heightened risk of requiring ventilatory support. He urged the public to adopt preventive measures and to receive the influenza vaccine prior to the onset of winter.

He further warned that the dense fog prevailing in parts of the country could facilitate the spread of the virus. "Standard precautions remain vital: wear face masks, wash hands frequently, and avoid close contact with anyone displaying symptoms," he advised.
