Kyoto Animation has officially announced a television anime adaptation of Masaoki Shindo’s manga RuriDragon, confirming the project in a newly released studio highlight video.
The announcement included a brief animated preview, shown during the video at the 1:23 mark, alongside a message stating that “the broadcast is still a long way off.”
At the time of reporting, no production staff or cast details had been disclosed. The studio also shared a commemorative illustration by Shindo through the anime’s official X account to mark the announcement.
RuriDragon is written and illustrated by Masaoki Shindo and currently has four collected volumes published in Japan.
The series debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in June 2022 before going on hiatus due to the author’s health. It later resumed publication in 2024 through the magazine’s digital edition and the Shonen Jump+ platform.
The manga centres on Ruri, a teenage girl who learns that she is half dragon after her mother reveals that her father is, in fact, a dragon.
VIZ Media, which distributes the English-language version via the Shonen Jump app and physical volumes, describes the story as follows: “Well, a half dragon. Her mom admits Ruri inherited her draconic traits from her father, who, yes, is actually a dragon. As if dealing with curious classmates wasn’t already challenging enough, Ruri and her dragon genes literally turn up the heat in the middle of a lecture. Her ordinary life is about to be anything but!”
Kyoto Animation is known for adapting character-driven manga into television anime, including Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. The studio’s involvement has drawn attention from fans of the original manga following the announcement.
While a release window has not been confirmed, the studio’s statement indicates that the series remains in early stages of development. Further updates, including broadcast timing and additional production details, are expected to be shared at a later date.
