George Clooney, Amal Clooney and their children granted French citizenship

George Clooney and his family have become French citizens, according to an official decree published in France

George Clooney, his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney and their two children have become French citizens, according to an official decree published in France’s government gazette and seen by AFP.

The move confirms comments made earlier this month in which the actor spoke positively about life in France and its legal protections.

Clooney, 64, previously referenced his intention to seek French nationality during an interview with RTL radio in December, where he praised France’s privacy laws. “Here, they don't take photos of kids. There aren't any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That's number one for us,” he said at the time.

Speaking in English, he also added, “I love the French culture, your language, even if I'm still bad at it after 400 days of courses.”

The actor now holds dual US-French citizenship. His wife Amal, a British-Lebanese human rights lawyer who speaks fluent French, and their eight-year-old twins are also included in the decree.

Clooney has maintained long-standing ties to Europe. He purchased a well-known property on Italy’s Lake Como in 2002 and later acquired a historic manor in England with Amal.

In 2021, the couple bought a former wine estate, the Domaine du Canadel, near Brignoles in the Provence region of southern France.

While the family continues to travel internationally, Clooney previously told RTL that their French home is where they feel happiest. The couple also own property in New York and Kentucky and have reportedly sold homes in Los Angeles and Mexico in recent years.

Beyond his personal life, Clooney remains active in film as an actor, director and producer. He has won two Academy Awards, one for best supporting actor in Syriana and another as a producer on Argo
