QUETTA:

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti was formally conferred the position of chief of the Bugti tribe during a traditional ceremony in Baikar on December 29, where tribal elders placed the customary turban on his head as a symbol of leadership, trust and responsibility.

The ceremony drew members of the provincial and national assemblies, provincial ministers and a wide range of tribal notables, reflecting both the cultural importance of the event and its resonance in political circles.

In his address to the gathering, Bugti described the tribal turban as a trust that demanded justice, courage, unity and sincerity. He pledged to serve the Bugti people with honesty and commitment and vowed not to disappoint his community.

The Bugti tribe is one of the prominent Baloch tribes in eastern Balochistan, primarily inhabiting the mountainous Dera Bugti region. The tribe is divided into several subgroups and has long been recognised for its internal structures of social organisation under tribal leadership.

Under traditional Baloch tribal systems, the title of chief, or tumandar, carries symbolic authority and practical influence over local affairs, customary dispute resolution and community cohesion. The position held by Bugti is historically significant within the Bugti community and is regarded as reflecting continuity in tribal leadership. The chieftainship of the Bugti tribe has a long lineage, historically passed down through generations of tribal leaders. It was first conferred on Bugti’s grandfather in the early 1800s, underscoring a long-standing tradition of tribal governance.

Mir Sarfraz Bugti was formally honoured as chief of the Bugti tribes when Nawabzada Zamran Saleem Akbar Khan Bugti, the brother of Nawab Mir Aali Khan Bugti, placed the turban on his head together with the chiefs of various Bugti sub-tribes.
