Filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry has been named in a $77 million lawsuit alleging sexual assault, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles by Mario Rodriguez, a model and actor who appeared in the 2016 comedy Boo! A Madea Halloween.
According to the complaint, Rodriguez claims his interactions with Perry began in 2014 after he was encouraged to audition for the film. He alleges that what initially appeared to be professional opportunities later became uncomfortable and inappropriate encounters.
The lawsuit describes several incidents in which Perry is accused of making unwanted physical advances during private meetings.
Rodriguez alleges that some of the encounters took place at Perry’s Los Angeles home and claims the conduct caused him emotional distress and professional harm.
The complaint also asserts that Perry later sent Rodriguez money on multiple occasions, which Rodriguez alleges was intended to keep him silent about the encounters.
In addition to Perry, the lawsuit names Lionsgate, the distributor of Boo! A Madea Halloween, alleging the company failed to address or prevent the alleged behavior.
Rodriguez is seeking significant damages and says he wants accountability through the legal process.
Perry’s attorney has strongly denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit a “failed money grab” and stating that the claims are false. Perry has not been charged with any criminal offense, and the allegations outlined in the lawsuit have not been proven in court.
The case is expected to proceed through the California court system, where both sides will have the opportunity to present evidence. As of now, Perry and Lionsgate have not issued further public statements beyond the initial denial.
