Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has prompted discussion about possible future content following its strong reception since release in April. While the game achieved significant recognition during awards season, its director has indicated that additional expansions are unlikely.
Speaking in a Future newsletter, Expedition 33 director Guillaume Broche addressed whether Sandfall Interactive plans to develop new content for the game. According to Broche, creating expansions is “not tempting” for the team, despite the project’s success and the studio’s improved financial position.
Broche explained that scaling up production would require the leadership team to move into more managerial roles, something he said does not align with the studio’s priorities. “We could scale up now that we have a lot more money, but I would say it’s not tempting for us, because even the management team and myself, we’d have to be hands-on and do things for ourselves,” he said. “We love making games more than we love managing, so we want to keep doing that.”
He also reflected on the development process, describing the past five years working on Expedition 33 as among the most fulfilling of his career. Broche added that he hopes to replicate that experience on future projects rather than extend the current one through downloadable content or expansions.
The comments come as players have speculated about a return to Lumiere, particularly given the broader industry trend of expanding successful titles through post-launch updates. While some games have opted for large expansions, others have chosen alternative approaches, including major updates or shifting attention to new projects.
Sandfall Interactive has already confirmed that it is “starting to think and work on the next real game”. Broche’s remarks suggest that, rather than expanding Expedition 33 directly, the studio views Clair Obscur as a broader franchise with potential future entries.
For now, the studio has not announced any additional content for Expedition 33. Based on the director’s comments, any return to its world is more likely to come through a new standalone title than through expansions to the existing game.
