Grand Theft Auto 6 could be positioned for long-term support following its release, as industry discussion points to the possibility of Rockstar Games planning a model designed to last for many years.

Long-running titles such as League of Legends, Fortnite, Counter-Strike and No Man’s Sky have demonstrated how modern games can remain active over extended periods.

Rockstar has already achieved this with Grand Theft Auto 5, which has spanned three console generations largely due to the continued success of GTA Online. Observers suggest a similar strategy could be applied to GTA 6.

Although Rockstar has so far emphasised the single-player campaign, the publisher has not outlined its plans for the next iteration of Grand Theft Auto Online. Commentary cited by WccfTech has fuelled speculation about how the online component could evolve alongside the new game.

In an interview discussing the future of MMORPGs in Western development, industry veteran Rich Vogel referenced GTA 6 while speaking about the genre’s prospects.

Vogel, who has worked on projects including Star Wars The Old Republic, DOOM (2016), Halo Infinite and Gotham Knights, said: “I believe a large audience is waiting for the right MMORPG to emerge.” He added that, based on what he had heard, GTA 6 “could evolve into an MMORPG, as many of its planned features are typically found in MMORPGs”.

Vogel did not provide further details and is not involved in the development of GTA 6. Rockstar has also made no public statements confirming any such direction. However, WccfTech noted that Rockstar’s acquisition of Cfx.re in 2023, the team behind popular GTA 5 role-playing mods, has been viewed by some as a potential indicator of future ambitions.

At present, all discussion remains speculative. Rockstar has yet to reveal concrete information about GTA 6’s online features or post-launch roadmap. What is known is that the studio has invested significant time and resources into the project, suggesting sustained support after launch.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled for release on November 19, 2026.
