KARACHI:

President Asif Ali Zardari decided to put his faith in satellite technology rather than revenue officials when it comes to assessing crop damage.

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Labour Minister Khursheed Shah, Nazar Mohammad Gondal and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf met the president at Bilawal House and briefed him on “crop damage in Sindh”.

They then went on to figure out what to do with the collected rainwater. They suggested treating it for use in irrigation, discharging it into River Indus or storing it in case of a drought.

The president pointed out that the government wants to introduce the concept of build, own, operate and maintain in order to create a sense of ownership among the growers for their infrastructure.

The president blamed the torrential rains on climate change and felt that the calamity will be converted into “opportunity”.

Earlier, growers and ginners pressed the government to exempt from the sales tax on the agriculture inputs and asked for a Rs50 billion subsidy.

Sindh Cabinet office, senior government and Sindh Abadgar Chamber officers and Ginners Association representatives were present at the meeting.
