IHC orders tough action on campus drugs
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) was informed on Wednesday that a special intelligence wing of the Special Branch has been established to prevent the spread of drugs in educational institutions.
In a report submitted to the court, Islamabad Police stated that a special unit of the Federal Police has also been formed. According to the report, plainclothes personnel of the Intelligence Wing will monitor educational institutions and their surroundings, collect intelligence on drug-related activities and maintain close coordination with schools, colleges and universities for swift action.
The report further said that the Special Investigation Unit is probing drug-related cases, gathering evidence and monitoring developments.
Justice Raja Inaam Ameen Minhas was hearing a case related to the eradication of drugs in educational institutions, during which Islamabad Police, the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and the Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Authority (PEIRA) submitted reports on the implementation of court orders.
During the hearing, Director Legal at the IG Office, Tahir Kazim, informed the court that two key meetings of stakeholders were held under the chairmanship of the Inspector General of Islamabad Police, in compliance with court directives, to devise a joint strategy to curb drug use in educational institutions.
