Prosecutors in Los Angeles County plan to file murder charges against Nick Reiner, the younger son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and author Michele Singer Reiner.
The charges follow the couple’s deaths at their Brentwood home, officials said Tuesday.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said his office will pursue two counts of first-degree murder, along with special circumstances alleging multiple victims and the use of a knife. Reiner, 32, was arrested Monday on suspicion of killing his parents and is currently being held without bail. Formal charges had not yet been filed as of Tuesday night.
Rob Reiner, 78, a celebrated actor and director, and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead Sunday in the master bedroom of their Los Angeles-area residence. A source close to the family told NBC News both victims had suffered stab wounds. Los Angeles Police Department Assistant Chief Dominic Choi confirmed the location of the bodies during a department meeting but declined to provide additional details about the investigation.
Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson, told reporters that his client was not medically cleared to appear in court on Tuesday due to a procedural issue, adding that he expected Reiner to be cleared soon.
Nick Reiner has previously spoken publicly about long-standing struggles with addiction. In a 2016 interview, he said his substance use began during his teenage years and led to repeated stays in rehabilitation. Those experiences later inspired the 2016 film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote and which was directed by his father.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Reiner and his parents attended a holiday party on Saturday, one day before the couple were found dead. The deaths have sent shockwaves through Hollywood, prompting tributes from political leaders and entertainment figures honoring Rob Reiner’s decades-long impact on film and television.
