Disney is revisiting one of its most infamous villains with a new live-action film centred on Gaston, the boastful hunter from Beauty and the Beast. The project, which is currently in development, will see the character brought to life in a fresh interpretation, separate from previous adaptations. The screenplay is being written by David Callaham, whose credits include Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. No director has been attached yet, and plot details remain under wraps.

Gaston, first introduced in Disney’s 1991 animated classic, is notorious for his arrogance, strength, and obsession with Belle, the bookish heroine. The 2017 live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast starred Luke Evans as Gaston, but he is not expected to return for the spinoff. Instead, Disney is aiming for a new actor to lead the project, signalling a reimagining of the iconic character.

The original tale, based on the French fairy story, follows Belle as she falls in love with the cursed Beast and ultimately breaks the spell over his kingdom, which is filled with talking household objects. Disney’s 1991 animation became the studio’s highest-grossing animated film at the time, and the 2017 live-action version, starring Emma Watson, was another major financial success. The Gaston spinoff represents the studio’s ongoing effort to mine its classic properties for new storytelling opportunities.

Disney has experienced mixed results with its live-action remakes. While films like Snow White have underperformed, titles including Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Aladdin have been massive hits. Other recent projects, such as Cruella, which premiered on Disney+, have explored origin stories for classic villains, receiving critical praise. The studio is also developing live-action versions of Tangled and a film about Prince Charming, further expanding its catalogue of reimagined fairy tales.

With Gaston now in the spotlight, Disney is tapping into a familiar yet underexplored character, offering audiences a deeper look at the life and personality of one of its most memorable antagonists. Whether this new take will match the success of previous adaptations remains to be seen, but it is clear Disney continues to find creative potential in its legendary characters.
