Hollow Knight Silksong to receive free Sea of Sorrow expansion in 2026

Team Cherry confirms a free Silksong expansion titled Sea of Sorrow, alongside Switch 2 updates planned for 2026

Developer Team Cherry has announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong will receive a free expansion titled Sea of Sorrow, scheduled for release in 2026. The announcement was made on Monday alongside early details and a brief teaser.

According to a blog post from the studio, Sea of Sorrow will be “nautically themed.” Further information about gameplay or story content has not yet been shared.

A teaser trailer released with the announcement shows protagonist Hornet standing on a rock formation as waves crash around her, offering a first visual indication of the expansion’s setting.

Team Cherry also confirmed that development is under way on a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the original Hollow Knight. The updated edition is intended to bring the game closer in line with the visual presentation of Silksong’s Switch 2 release. Planned improvements include higher frame rates, sharper resolution and other graphical enhancements.

The studio said that the Hollow Knight Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will be available as a free upgrade for players who already own the game on the original Nintendo Switch. Both the Silksong expansion and the updated version of Hollow Knight are currently planned for a broad 2026 release window.

Silksong itself has had a long development history, having originally begun life as downloadable content for the first Hollow Knight before Team Cherry expanded the project into a standalone game. The studio previously said the scope of the project exceeded what was feasible for an expansion.

Released in 2025, Hollow Knight: Silksong received strong critical recognition and was nominated for five awards at The Game Awards, including Game of the Year. It went on to win Best Action/Adventure Game.

Team Cherry has not announced more specific release dates for either Sea of Sorrow or the Switch 2 update.
