An argument involving director Rob Reiner and his son, Nick Reiner, at a Hollywood holiday party has drawn attention following the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home, according to accounts from people familiar with the family.
Several attendees said a verbal dispute occurred at a Christmas gathering hosted by Conan O’Brien.
Witnesses described the exchange as tense, after which Rob and Michele Reiner left the event early. Friends later told investigators that the couple had expressed concern in recent months about their son’s mental health and ongoing struggles with substance use.
The following day, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 68, were found dead in their Brentwood residence. Their daughter, Romy Reiner, contacted authorities after discovering the bodies, according to sources briefed on the investigation.
Nick Reiner, 32, was later taken into custody and charged in connection with their deaths. Authorities have said the case remains under investigation, and Nick Reiner has not entered a plea.
People close to the family say Nick Reiner had been living at the home and had a long history of addiction and treatment attempts. Public records and past interviews indicate he had spoken openly about periods of relapse and recovery over the years. Friends have said disagreements over treatment options were a recurring source of tension within the family.
Rob Reiner was widely known for his work as an actor and director, with credits including All in the Family, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally. Tributes from colleagues described him as a respected filmmaker and collaborator.
Nick Reiner is currently being held without bail and has reportedly been placed on suicide watch. Law enforcement officials have said additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
