Singer and songwriter Tate McRae has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of public scrutiny following her breakup with fellow musician The Kid LAROI, revealing that the level of attention she received was both unexpected and frightening.
In a recent interview, McRae described the intense focus on her personal life after the couple parted ways as “really scary and overwhelming,” saying she never anticipated how deeply public curiosity would affect her.
She explained that becoming the subject of widespread speculation made her realize how little people truly know about the full story behind a relationship.
McRae also addressed the fan-driven theories connecting her music to the breakup, including her own track “Tit for Tat”.
While she acknowledged that both she and her ex will write songs as part of expressing themselves, she said that once art is released into the world, it takes on a life of its own and becomes subject to interpretation.
Despite the pressure, McRae shared that there were positive moments throughout the experience, including support from fellow artists.
She highlighted how meaningful it was to receive recognition from one of her biggest inspirations, describing it as a special moment in her career.
Reflecting on the breakup itself, McRae said she still holds respect and care for her former partner, emphasizing that ending a relationship doesn’t erase the impact someone had in your life.
She admitted it can be difficult to navigate lingering feelings, but time and perspective will ultimately shape how both artists move forward.
