James Gunn says the new Supergirl film will introduce a version of Kara Zor-El who is deliberately less idealized than past on-screen portrayals, describing the character as “messy” in ways often reserved for male superheroes.

Gunn and actress Milly Alcock discussed the film at a small media event in New York, where attendees were shown an early teaser. The preview featured a young Supergirl navigating personal turmoil, impulsive decisions and intergalactic conflict, reflecting a more conflicted interpretation of the character.

“Female superheroes are often written as perfect,” Gunn said at the event. “She’s not that.”

The film, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, has had a long and complicated development timeline. Originally initiated in 2018, the project was paused during the pandemic, reconsidered after changes at Warner Bros., and eventually rebuilt as part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. Sasha Calle was initially attached to the role, but the final version stars Alcock.

According to Gillespie, the story incorporates elements from the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and portrays Kara as someone carrying unresolved trauma while undertaking a mission that becomes increasingly difficult. In the teaser, she contrasts herself with Superman by saying he “sees the good in everyone” while she “sees the truth.”

The event took place during an uncertain moment for the studio, as Warner Bros. faced reports of potential corporate changes and acquisition interest. Gunn noted, however, that such developments are not expected to affect the film’s release, given that any major transition would take years to complete.
