Gene Simmons’ recent television appearance in Washington, D.C., has prompted considerable online discussion after an unexpected question he directed at Scripps News anchor Maritsa Georgiou during a live interview.

The Kiss frontman, 76, had travelled to the capital to advocate for the American Music Fairness Act, a bill aimed at addressing compensation gaps for musicians affected by streaming and industry consolidation.

Simmons testified in Congress before joining the Atlanta-based Scripps News network to discuss the bill, first introduced in January by Congressmen Darrell Issa and Jerry Nadler. For most of the interview, Simmons maintained a formal tone while outlining his support for fair payment for artists.

The exchange shifted in the final moments when Georgiou closed by thanking him for appearing. Simmons then asked, “By the way, are you still modelling?”

Georgiou appeared surprised and responded, “What?” prompting Simmons to repeat the question. She replied, “Modelling? I don’t model sir,” to which he answered, “Oh, I assumed.” Georgiou concluded with a courteous farewell, and Simmons wished her “all the best.”

The moment circulated widely online, with viewers noting the contrast between the policy-focused conversation and its closing remark. Reactions referenced Simmons’ longstanding public persona, which has been widely discussed throughout his career.

The musician has previously spoken about his past behaviour, including a 2016 comment that he had slept with “4,800 women” during his decades with Kiss.

Simmons has also appeared in recent entertainment headlines following the death of longtime bandmate Ace Frehley in October. In a statement issued with guitarist Paul Stanley, he described Frehley as “an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history.”

The interview adds to ongoing conversations about Simmons’ public appearances as he continues to promote policy efforts and engage with media outlets.
