David Corenswet is opening up about the now-viral behind-the-scenes moment from the “Superman” set, where he was seen in a passionate creative debate with director James Gunn.
In a new Actors on Actors conversation, the Superman star says he feels “very lucky” the exchange was captured on camera, because it revealed the real dynamics of collaboration on a massive superhero film.
According to Corenswet, reactions to the footage ranged widely — from people saying, “That’s what always happens,” to others assuming it reflected a “terrible working environment.” But for him, the interaction was completely normal. “For me, it does happen all the time,” he explained, emphasizing that open dialogue is essential when shaping a character as iconic as Clark Kent.
Corenswet praised Gunn for his patience and commitment to the creative process. “It was amazing how indefatigable James was,” he said. “He very rarely got fed up with me, because I think he knew the reason I’m having those conversations is, at my boldest, because I think I might see something he doesn’t see — and he might value.”
The actor noted that his questions and suggestions were never about ego but about deepening the story and exploring moments that might enhance the film. Gunn’s willingness to engage, Corenswet added, created an environment where experimentation was welcomed rather than discouraged.
The viral moment, he believes, ultimately showcased the trust and respect between actor and director — a dynamic that helped shape one of the most anticipated superhero movies of 2025.
