National Games begin in Karachi with spectacular opening ceremony

The games are being held after a gap of two decades

KARACHI:

The 35th National Games were officially launched with a grand and colourful opening ceremony at the National Stadium Karachi, marking the return of Pakistan’s premier multi-sport event to the city after nearly two decades.

The historic occasion drew thousands of spectators, athletes, officials and dignitaries, creating a festive atmosphere that blended national pride with sporting spirit.

The highlight of the ceremony was the lighting of the Olympic torch by Paris Olympics gold medallist Arshad Nadeem, who was joined by legendary former Pakistan hockey captain and Olympian Islahuddin Siddiqui and other national sports icons. The moment was met with thunderous applause as the flame symbolised hope, unity and the spirit of competition.

Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari graced the event as the chief guest, alongside Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sindh Sports Minister Sardar Muhammad Bux Mahar, provincial ministers, and senior officials from the Pakistan Olympic Association and various sports federations.

The ceremony featured a traditional march-past of all participating units, showcasing the diversity of Pakistan’s sporting landscape. Young Sindh athletes Muhammad Zubair Muneer and Mahnoor Fatima then administered the athletes’ oath, pledging fair play and sportsmanship. Following this, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari officially declared the National Games open.

Addressing the crowd, Bilawal said: “Hosting the National Games in Sindh after 18 years is an honour. Youth from across Pakistan are here to showcase their talent, and we welcome them to Sindh’s warm hospitality.”

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah termed the return of the Games to Karachi a historic milestone.

“The National Games reflect Pakistan’s unity and diversity. After twenty years, their return to Karachi is a proud moment for the province and its people,” he said.

The opening ceremony was a blend of sport and culture. Thousands of students from public and private institutions filled the stadium, while a dedicated enclosure ensured accessibility for persons with disabilities, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the Games.

Spectators were treated to captivating performances, including exhibition sports demonstrations, a stunning laser light show, and live musical performances by Hadiqa Kiani and Ali Zafar, who brought energy and excitement to the evening. The ceremony concluded with a magnificent fireworks display that lit up the Karachi skyline.

With the stage now set, the 35th National Games promise days of thrilling competition, as athletes from across Pakistan battle for glory and aim to inspire a new generation of sports lovers.
