Paramount schedules Sonic universe event film for 2028 as franchise expansion continues

Paramount has added a new title to its long-term release plans, confirming that an untitled Sonic universe event film will arrive in cinemas on December 22 2028.

The project forms part of the studio’s wider slate, which also includes a live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film set for November 17 2028 and a 40th anniversary re-release of Top Gun in 2026.

The new film is separate from Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which remains scheduled for March 19 2027. That instalment is expected to see Ben Schwartz continue voicing Sonic, with Jim Carrey returning as Dr Robotnik.

Paramount has not released plot details, casting information, or a title for the 2028 film, and no official creative direction has been announced. Speculation online has centred on the possibility of characters such as Shadow the Hedgehog appearing in future projects.

Fans have also discussed whether the studio could draw on additional concepts from Sega games as it develops what many describe as an expanding Sonic universe. Paramount has not confirmed any of these theories.

Interest in the franchise has remained high, supported by the strong performance of the third Sonic film, which was released last December. The studio’s ongoing scheduling suggests a continued commitment to broadening the series across multiple films over the coming years.
