Early reactions to James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash indicate that the director’s third return to Pandora has impressed members of the film press with its scale and technical ambition.

The film was screened to journalists ahead of its release later this month, prompting a wave of commentary on social media describing the production as an ultimate cinematic spectacle that pushes visual possibilities.

Film critic Courtney Howard wrote on X that the film reminds viewers "what movie theatres were built for". She described it as "emotionally impactful" and called it "a glorious saga".

Fellow critic Sean Tajipour said Cameron "continues to push boundaries with every frame" and noted that the film demonstrates the director’s ability to deliver spectacle while elevating visuals and emotion.

Collider correspondent Perri Nemiroff wrote that the film "truly feels like a ride" and highlighted the ease with which she returned to the world of Pandora. She observed an increase in complexity across several areas of the production. Film writer Michael Lee said the story left something to be desired but praised the film’s world-building and technical reach, describing the visuals and action as "out-of-this-world".

Avatar: Fire and Ash follows the events of Avatar: The Way of Water and centres on the Sully family as they grieve the loss of their son while facing a new threat from the Fire tribe, led by Varang. The returning cast includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet.

Cameron recently noted that the future of the franchise depends on the performance of this instalment, though he has expressed willingness to continue directing further sequels. Avatar: Fire and Ash opens in cinemas on December 19.
