At Monday Night's Gotham Awards spoke out against artificial intelligence in filmmaking during his acceptance speech for the Vanguard Tribute for Frankenstein.
Joined onstage by Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, del Toro started his speech by honouring Mary Shelley whose story inspired him to adapt it to film at just 11 years old.
After praising Elordi and Isaac's performance and remarks from the actors themselves, del Toro took the mic once again to pay tribute to the artisans who handcrafted the world of Frankenstein and condemn the growing use of AI in Hollywood.
“I’d like to tell the rest of our extraordinary cast and our crew that the artistry of all of them shines on every single frame of this film that was willfully made by humans, for humans,” he emphasised. “The designers, builders, make-up, wardrobe team, cinematographers, composers, editors, this tribute belongs to all of them. I would like to extend our gratitude and say: Fuck AI.”

Meanwhile, Isaac expressed admiration for his peers and exclaimed “I am proud to be standing here tonight; a Guatemalan, an Australian, and a Mexican. Immigrants, baby, we get the job done.”
