Keith Urban performed his 2024 song “Messed Up as Me” during the November 30 episode of his CBS series The Road, highlighting the struggles of a “toxic” couple who aren’t “good for each other.”
The performance took place in Little Rock, Arkansas, as Urban closed a concert on the show.
The lyrics reflect conflict and emotional turmoil:
“When you get mad, you stay that way / And you always say you’re doin’ OK / But we both know it’s probably a lie / And you’re fallin’ to pieces on the inside,” he sang.
Later lines describe loneliness and the lingering presence of a former partner.
Urban previously explained the meaning behind the track, describing it as a song about a dysfunctional relationship where two people know they aren’t right for each other but keep returning because of one thing they do well together.
The performance comes shortly after Urban and Nicole Kidman confirmed their split following 19 years of marriage. The couple met in 2005, married a year later, and share two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith.
In public statements over the years, Kidman and Urban have spoken about the love, effort, and partnership involved in their marriage, acknowledging the challenges as well as the joy of raising a family together.
On The Road, Urban also addressed the challenges of life on tour, describing the physical and emotional demands of performing night after night and the sacrifices required by a career in music.
He framed the show as a test for participants to see who is suited for the rigors of life on the road.
