Zootopia 2 breaks Avengers: Endgame record with record-setting China box office
Disney’s Zootopia 2 is dominating the Chinese box office, breaking records previously held by Avengers: Endgame.
The animated sequel, featuring the popular duo Nick and Judy, has drawn massive crowds since its debut, signaling strong international appeal for the franchise.
On opening day, Zootopia 2 earned $34 million in China, marking the highest opening day ever for a U.S. animated film in the territory. The figure also ranks as the 10th largest opening day for any U.S. release in China. The momentum continued into Saturday, with China contributing an additional $104 million, breaking the record for the biggest single-day box office previously set by Avengers: Endgame.
Globally, Zootopia 2 has been released in 17 markets, with top earnings coming from China ($94.2M), South Korea ($4.6M), France ($4.5M), Mexico ($3.7M), and Germany ($2.8M). Industry estimates suggest the film could reach a $525 million-plus global opening weekend if current trends continue. This performance positions Zootopia 2 to surpass previous franchise and blockbuster openings, including Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($450M), Captain Marvel ($456M), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 ($483M).
Directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, Zootopia 2 continues the adventures of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde while appealing to both children and families worldwide. Analysts highlight that Disney’s strategic marketing, strong franchise recognition, and fan anticipation have contributed to the record-breaking performance in China, solidifying the country’s role as a key international market for Hollywood releases.
With unprecedented single-day and opening weekend numbers, Zootopia 2 has firmly established itself as one of the most successful animated releases in global box office history.
