Nationalist leaders warn against division of Sindh

KARACHI:

Sindh nationalist parties have strongly condemned the recent constitutional amendments, particularly the 26th and 27th Amendments, accusing the ruling coalition of the PPP and PML-N of paralysing the superior judiciary.

Addressing a news conference at the Karachi Press Club on Friday, Awami Tehreek Central President Advocate Vasand Thari, Sindhyani Tehreek President Umrah Samo, Awami Tehreek Senior Vice President Noor Ahmed Katpar, Sindhi Students Tehreek President Advocate Naveed Abbas Kalhoro, and Sindhi Girl Students Tehreek Central Organiser Advocate Konj Lashari, expressed their deep concern over the constitutional tweaks.

They claimed that the amendments, particularly those granting lifetime immunity to top government functionaries, were in direct violation of the Constitution, legal principles, and fundamental human rights. They argued that the amendments undermined the judiciary's independence, ignored justice and equality, and breached international norms. They expressed particular alarm over reports suggesting that a 28th constitutional amendment might include provisions for the creation of new provinces, the reduction of Sindh's share in the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, and the introduction of a new local government system.
