Lawyers march against 26th, 27th amendments in Rawalpindi

Punjab Bar leaders call amendments an attack on judicial independence

Rawalpindi court

Lawyers from the Rawalpindi High Court Bar and District Bar staged a protest and rally against the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments.

The protest was led by Malik Tawfiq Asif, along with Punjab Bar Council members Malik Faisal Mahmood, Raja Shahid Abbasi, and Sibtain Bukhari. The lawyers marched from the district courts to the judicial complex while chanting slogans. Tawfiq Asif said they reject any constitutional amendment and will continue their protest.

Punjab Bar Council member Malik Faisal Mahmood said the amendments have undermined the structure of the Constitution and were introduced to protect a single individual. He added that Islam and Shariah allow no such exceptions, and lawyers across all political parties are united against the amendments.

He described the amendments as a “drone attack” on the Constitution and an assault on an independent judiciary. Lawyers will continue their struggle until judicial independence is restored. “The lawyers are alive and will not let the Constitution of 1973 be trampled,” he said, adding that, due to these amendments, the IMF has ranked Pakistan’s judiciary as the most corrupt.

Lawyers circulated throughout the court complex, carrying placards with anti-amendment slogans. They chanted strongly worded slogans against the amendments and the government before dispersing. They announced that daily protests will continue and that a major rally will be held on December 6.
